Two More Moves Affect Three Providence Players

P-BRUINS SEND TWO TO READING
Forwards Riendeau and Labelle Bound for ECHL
March 31, 2010

Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins, in their 18th year in the American Hockey League, announced that the National Hockey League's Boston Bruins have reassigned forward Yannick Riendeau to the Reading Royals of the ECHL. Providence has also released forward Olivier Labelle from his Professional Tryout Agreement and he will return to Reading. With the moves, the P-Bruins have 22 players on their roster, including 12 forwards, eight defensemen and two goaltenders.

Riendeau, 21, heads to Reading for the second time this season after an ECHL stint from February 14-22. The rookie scored two goals and added an assist in his three games for the Royals. In two stretches for Providence, Riendeau appeared in 22 games overall, contributing one goal and four assists. His first and only career AHL goal came against the Hartford Wolf Pack on March 21.

Riendeau's professional career officially began on December 28, 2009 when he was assigned to Providence by Boston after missing the first 34 games of the AHL season due to injury. The right wing made his pro debut the following night at the Springfield Falcons, tallying his first pro point with an assist.

Riendeau enjoyed a standout junior season in 2008-09 with the Drummondville Voltigeurs, where he led the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League in scoring during both the regular season and the playoffs. In 64 regular season games, the native of Boucherville, Quebec scored 58 goals and tallied 68 assists for 126 points before adding 52 points, including 29 goals, in just 19 postseason contests. Riendeau's playoff totals set Voltigeurs franchise records, while his 16 postseason power play goals set a QMJHL record. His postseason performance earned him the league's Guy Lafleur Trophy as the Playoff Most Valuable Player. Riendeau was signed to an entry-level contract by Boston on April 2, 2009.

Labelle, 24, signed a PTO with Providence on March 26 after beginning the season with Reading, where he had 23 goals and 39 points in 52 games. The fourth-year pro appeared in two games for the P-Bruins during his recall, going scoreless. He made his AHL season debut on March 26 against the Portland Pirates.

In his pro career, Labelle has appeared in 274 games between the regular season and playoffs, totaling 174 points (85g, 89a) and 691 penalty minutes as a member of seven different squads. The undrafted native of St. Eustache, Quebec has enjoyed AHL time with Providence, the Syracuse Crunch, Bridgeport Sound Tigers and Manitoba Moose, along with ECHL stints with Reading, the Utah Grizzlies and Victoria Salmon Kings.

LAMMERS RELEASED FROM PTO

With the move, the P-Bruins have 21 players on their roster, including 12 forwards, eight defensemen and two goaltenders.

Lammers, 24, joined Providence on January 13 and went on to appear in 31 games for the P-Bruins, registering eight goals, nine assists and a plus-six rating. He made his Providence debut on January 15 at the Bridgeport Sound Tigers and later had his best game as a member of the P-Bruins on February 26 at the Binghamton Senators, recording a hat trick on seven shots and a plus-four rating. Series of Transactions Allows Lack of Cohesion

Recalls, Releases, and PTO's This Week
by T. Chace Jr.
March 28, 2010

As I mentioned in my last article, the amount of transactions by both Boston and Providence has in my opinion really affected the AHL Bruins. Just look at what went down in the last week alone. The roster has never been the same, it changes almost daily and trying to establish an identity with all the moves and numerous injuries has Providence on the brink of not making the playoffs for only the third time in 18 seasons. Here is a list of transactions this week alone:

After Boston called up Trent Whitfield and Jeff Penner on March 18th.

March 19, 2010 - The Providence Bruins, in their 18th year in the American Hockey League, announced that the National Hockey League's Boston Bruins have assigned forward Trent Whitfield and defenseman Jeff Penner to Providence. Both players were recalled on an emergency basis on March 18 and were healthy scratches during Boston's game against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday night.

March 19, 2010 - The Providence Bruins, in their 18th year in the American Hockey League, announced that they have assigned defensemen Rob Kwiet and Scott Fletcher to the ECHL's Reading Royals.

March 19, 2010 - The Providence Bruins, in their 18th year in the American Hockey League, announced that they have signed defenseman Jody Pederson to an Amateur Tryout Agreement.

March 25, 2010 - The Providence Bruins, in their 18th year in the American Hockey League, announced that the National Hockey League's Boston Bruins have recalled forward Trent Whitfield from Providence.

March 26, 2010 - The Providence Bruins, in their 18th year in the American Hockey League, announced that they have signed forward Olivier Labelle to a Professional Tryout Agreement and forward Devin Timberlake to an Amateur Tryout Agreement.

March 26, 2010 - The Providence Bruins, in their 18th year in the American Hockey League, announced that they have released defenseman Jody Pederson from his Amateur Tryout Agreement.

Winter of Discontent

Proud Providence Team Barely Holding On
by T. Chace Jr.
March 25, 2010

Mathematically the Providence Bruins still have an opportunity to gain entrance to the AHL Calder Cup Playoffs, which they have accomplished every season of their existence, with the exceptions of the 1993-94 and 1997-98 seasons. They returned to Rhode Island’s capital city in 1992 and they have had successful seasons every year, including a Calder Cup Championship in 1999. Last season they were defeated in the Eastern Conference finals by the eventual Calder Cup Champion Hershey Bears. However, this year is unlike years past when the nucleus of the team remained intact for most of the regular season. This season has been marred by a series of injuries and promotions to the big club in Boston and then a subsequent return of those players to Providence. The shuffling of those players along with those brought up from the ECHL and veteran PTO’s changed the team’s chemistry on a weekly, sometimes daily basis. As a result, it seems from these eyes that here has been a lack of cohesion all season long.

With just eight games remaining in the season for Providence, the Bruins trail the eighth place team in the conference by eight points. The daunting task ahead of them is quite difficult especially when you consider that all their remaining games are against Atlantic Division opponents and they have the least number of games to be played. If the season ended today, five of the eight teams now qualified for the Eastern Conference playoffs are from the Atlantic Division. In the last ten games for Providence they have only managed two victories, despite playing a lot of close games.

The reality is that Providence mirrors Boston when it comes to scoring goals this season. Providence has only one 20 goal scorer, Mikko Lehtonen, who has 23 goals to go along with 26 assists for 49 points. These totals don’t even get him in the top 40 of all scorers in the AHL. Captain Trent Whitfield has 17 goals which are second on the club, but the team does not possess the scoring punch of other teams in the league. The goaltending at the beginning of the season through the halfway point of the season was very good but in the last quarter of the season it has declined somewhat. Dany Sabourin has played the fourth most minutes in the league and is third in the league in saves. Of late, Kevin Regan has seen his minutes increase. Sabourin’s goals against average of 2.67 is also not in the top twenty in the league. On defense, Andy Wozniewski is tied for ninth in the league among defensemen in points with 41 and is fourth among defensemen in power-play points with 24. The loss of Providence veteran Adam McQuaid to both call ups and injury has affected the overall defense and the team’s toughness. In regards to toughness, rookie Lane MacDermid, leads all rookies in penalty minutes with 155 and is first in major penalties with 21. In recent weeks, several young players have picked up their game including Levi Nelson, John Lammers, Jordan Knackstedt, and Andrew Bodnarchuk. By all accounts their season is on the brink, yet the pride in the organization and the upcoming emotional rivalries could propel them to the playoffs. That’s why they play the games, you never know what’s possible, and this Providence team, based on their past history will most assuredly make it interesting.

Bitz had nine points in 45 games for the Bruins this season. Weller has spent the entire season in the AHL.
